Thread count is one of the first numbers you see when choosing hotel linen, and many buyers assume higher is always better. In reality, the right choice depends on your hotel's category, how often the linen is laundered, and the experience you want your guests to have.
What is thread count?
Thread count is the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. A higher count usually means a denser, softer fabric, but only up to a point. Beyond that, the difference in feel becomes small, while the fabric gets heavier, more expensive and slower to wash and dry.
Recommended thread counts for hotels
- 200 TC: suits serviced apartments and budget hotels where price and durability matter most.
- 250 TC: the most popular choice in hotels, balancing good softness with excellent resistance to frequent industrial laundering.
- 300 TC: for 4- and 5-star hotels that want a more luxurious feel with good durability.
- 400 TC and above: very luxurious, but needs more careful laundering and costs more. Note that some very high counts use multi-ply threads, so they do not always mean better quality.
Thread count is not everything
- Fibre: pure cotton is soft and breathable, while cotton–polyester blends last longer, wrinkle less and dry faster, which matters in daily hotel operations.
- Weave: percale feels crisp and light; sateen feels smoother with a subtle sheen.
- Design: plain white is classic and easy to bleach; 1 cm or 3 cm stripes add a premium look and hide signs of use better.
Quick tips before you buy
- Estimate how many wash cycles a year your linen will go through, and choose a durable blend for industrial laundries.
- Order a sample and wash it several times before placing the full order.
- Keep at least three sets per bed: one on the bed, one in the laundry and one in storage.
- Standardise sizes and designs across rooms to simplify operations and stock.
